This is why you get the red 3 flashing lights: it has to do with the solder underneath the chips. Microsoft was trying to be green and mainly cut costs by using a cheaper soldering material. If you remember in chemistry class, when metal is heated up, it expands. This is what happens with the soldering joints when the Xbox is on for long periods of time, the soldering joints expand. It’s supposed to expand with heat, but the issue has to do when it cools down. What happens is that air bubbles start to form inside the soldering joints and it known as cold solder joints. What happens is under the chips where these weak points are formed, they being to crack with the Xbox 360 always heating up and cooling down.

The Xbox 360 ring of death towel trick only causes more issues and more cracks underneath the chips.

The way the towel trick works is that it gets too hot and the solder melts, but it also creates more issues like more air bubbles. These cracks don’t have to be big. Even a hairline crack is enough for electrical current to be cut off.
